FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Browse common questions by area of care.

 •
DrVoice treats hoarseness, vocal cord lesions (nodules, polyps, cysts), voice disorders after intubation or trauma, and functional voice problems, alongside voice feminisation, deepening and aesthetic procedures.

 •
The degree of voice deepening depends on your anatomy, vocal fold biomechanics, and the selected surgical technique.

As a general guideline:

* Diamond Laryngoplasty™ lowers the speaking pitch by approximately 5 semitones.

* Laser Relaxation Glottoplasty™ (LRxG) lowers the speaking pitch by approximately 3 semitones.

The goal is not simply to lower the pitch, but to achieve a voice that sounds natural, effortless, and authentic.

 • If hoarseness or a voice change lasts longer than two to three weeks, a specialist assessment is recommended. Persistent throat discomfort or vocal fatigue should also be evaluated.

 •
There is no universal operation for voice deepening.

The choice between Diamond Laryngoplasty™ and Laser Relaxation Glottoplasty™ (LRxG) depends on:

* Your vocal fold anatomy

* Presence of sulcus vocalis or vocal fold stiffness

* Laryngeal framework

* Professional voice requirements

* Singing expectations

* Personal goals

A detailed online assessment is usually sufficient to determine the most appropriate treatment before you travel to Istanbul.

 • All surgical procedures and advanced treatments are performed at our fully equipped Istanbul clinic, while our London office handles consultations and treatment planning.

 •
Yes.

Most international patients are evaluated online before travelling.

Your voice recordings, medical history, and endoscopic examinations (if available) are reviewed in advance, allowing us to establish a preliminary diagnosis and develop an individualized treatment plan before your visit.

 •
No.

One of the unique advantages of both Diamond Laryngoplasty™ and Laser Relaxation Glottoplasty™ (LRxG) is that they are designed to preserve—and in many patients even improve—vocal flexibility.

Rather than reducing your vocal range, these procedures often increase the usable pitch range by releasing excessive tension and restoring more efficient vocal biomechanics.

Professional voice users and singers can usually return to singing after appropriate healing and, when necessary, voice rehabilitation.

 •
No.

A successful result is much more than a lower pitch.

As the voice matures, it usually becomes:

* richer

* more stable

* more resonant

* more confident

* more expressive

Many patients discover that a deeper, healthier voice allows them to express a wider variety of vocal archetypes and emotional nuances in everyday communication.

 •
For patients seeking the deepest, richest, and most authoritative vocal quality—the so-called “Million Dollar Voice”—Diamond Laryngoplasty™ is generally the most effective surgical option.

Its powerful effect on laryngeal biomechanics enables a remarkable transformation while maintaining a natural vocal quality.

 •
Laser Relaxation Glottoplasty™ (LRxG) leaves no external scar, as it is performed entirely through the mouth.

Diamond Laryngoplasty™ requires a small incision in the neck.

Like all surgical procedures, scar formation is part of the normal healing process. However, in most patients the scar gradually fades and becomes barely noticeable, often blending naturally into the skin within approximately one year.

 •
Voice rest is usually recommended for 5 to 7 days, depending on the surgical technique and individual healing.

Detailed postoperative instructions will be provided for each patient.

 •
Sometimes.

Surgery changes the vocal instrument, while voice therapy helps you learn how to use your new voice efficiently.

Many patients benefit from postoperative voice therapy to maximize vocal quality, stability, endurance, and communication skills.

 •
No.

With proper patient selection and modern microsurgical techniques, there is no expected risk of permanent voice loss or ending up with a worse voice as a consequence of surgery.

Every procedure is carefully planned according to the individual’s anatomy and vocal goals to achieve the safest possible outcome.

 •
All examinations, surgical planning, and operations are personally performed by Prof. Dr. İsmail Koçak.

Patients are treated directly by the surgeon who developed these original voice deepening procedures.

 •
Yes.

Voice surgery requires equipment that differs significantly from standard ENT surgery.

DrVoice Clinic utilizes dedicated microsurgical instruments, specialized CO₂ laser technology, advanced endoscopic imaging systems, and custom-designed surgical equipment developed specifically for precision phonosurgery.

Every component of the operating room is optimized exclusively for voice surgery.

 •
Yes.

Most postoperative follow-up consultations can be conducted online.

This allows international patients to continue their recovery and receive professional guidance without the need for repeated travel to Istanbul.

 •
Most international patients stay 5–7 days, allowing sufficient time for surgery, the initial healing period, and the first postoperative examination before returning home.

 •
Most patients return to office-based work within one week.

For professional voice users—including singers, actors, teachers, broadcasters, and public speakers—the return to full vocal performance depends on healing and individualized voice rehabilitation.

 •
Yes.

One of the advantages of Laser Relaxation Glottoplasty™ (LRxG) is that, in selected patients, it can simultaneously address both voice deepening and sulcus vocalis, reducing excessive vocal fold tension while improving vocal fold vibration.

This combined approach is unique and is considered whenever appropriate after comprehensive examination.

 • A comprehensive assessment uses pure-tone and speech audiometry to determine the degree and type of any hearing loss, forming the basis for a personalised plan.

 • Yes. Videonystagmography (VNG) and vertigo tests identify inner-ear causes, and vestibular rehabilitation is delivered under audiologist supervision.

 • Coaching supports speakers, teachers, performers and professionals who rely on their voice, improving breathing technique, projection and endurance.

 • For healthy voices, coaching can begin directly. If there are symptoms of a voice disorder, a medical assessment is recommended first.

 • Hormonal and metabolic balance affects vocal tissue and overall wellbeing. Nutritional support complements medical and coaching treatment plans.
